Abstract/Contents:Italian ryegrass seed pelleted with poultry or dairy manure retained its viability for about 6 months. In pot experiments, germination and seedling establishment was higher on soil than on dead leaves and humus; coarse organic material needed ample water for germination. Using wooden boxes, pellet breakdown and germination was more rapid in level boxes or with 10 mm simulated rainfall/h than in tilted boxes or with 30 mm rainfall/h. In the field, removal of leaf litter and a humus layer from the soil surface by raking increased seedling establishment and early development compared with pellets sown on an undisturbed surface.
