| Abstract/Contents: | In trials at 4 sites in N. Otago and 2 in S. Canterbury, New Zealand in 1966-8, 4 cereals (wheat cv. Arawa or Hilgendorf, ryecorn cv. CRD, oats cv. Winter Grey or Amuri and barley cv. Carlsberg or Kakapo) and 2 annual ryegrasses (cv. Grasslands Paroa or Tama) were oversown into lucerne in the autumn. Cereals were more productive than annual ryegrasses when left uncut until the spring. N fertilizer (125-250 kg nitrolime/ha) improved growth of the oversown species but also stimulated weed growth where there was inadequate competition from the oversown species. It was concluded that the productive potential of the oversown cereals would best be used by leaving them ungrazed from sowing until early- to mid-spring, but this would have to be weighed against other management factors. |
