Abstract/Contents:Interviews seven golf course architects, some of whom are current or former superintendents, on golf course design by superintendents. Discusses the characteristics of a good designer, advice for superintendents who wish to design, pitfalls and challenges of design, preparation and background, recruiting design staff, careers in design, and rewards of golf course design. Describes the experiences of Scott Hoffman in designing The Classic Course at Madden's on Gull Lake in Brainerd, Minnesota, stating that "[Hoffman and his crew] did things a little bit backwards. [They] cleaned out all the woods and seeded the area. [They] grassed the woods before [they] did anything else. The second year [they] really came in and did all the grading and shaping of fairways and greens and tees and put the irrigation in."
