Abstract/Contents:In pot trials, Italian ryegrass was given 0.5 or 4 g N/pot and soil moisture regimes of 65 or 30% of field water capacity. Plants were also grown hydroponically. Leaf growth was characterized by a regular sequence of leaves. In each instance only the 2 youngest leaves of the shoot showed elongation, the older leaf ceasing to grow as soon as a new leaf formed. The final length of successive leaves was greatest between the 7th and 9th leaves. It was concluded that leaf growth was closely correlated with shading of the next leaf bud. Leaf development was largely independent of water and N supply.
