Abstract/Contents:In experiments using Italian ryegrass, soil resistance (Rs) to water flow determined from soil physical measurements showed no agreement with soil + plant resistance (Rs + Rp) determined by the difference in water potential between soil and leaves and transpiration rate. Correction for Rs for a soil-root interface resistance dependent on soil water content did not result in agreement with Rs + Rp. It was concluded that Rs was not limiting within the range of 0.1-15 bar soil water potential with 18 cm of roots/cm3. Rp was shown to decrease with increasing water flow rate. No unique relationship between Rp and leaf water potential was found. Stomatal resistance and transpiration rate decreased rapidly as soil-water potential decreased below -11 bar.
