Abstract/Contents:Discusses research conducted to examine the effects of an increase in broadleaf woodlands on water resources and water quality in England. Broadleaf woodlands were found to use more water than other land uses such as agriculture. Short rotation coppice, or the practice of planting fast-growing trees for commercial use, used the most water. Other effects of trees included trapping and storing of nitrogen that otherwise might enter groundwater, and buffering of water resouces from agricultural and other lands where pesticides are used.
