Abstract/Contents: | Thin-layer chromatography of the steroidal components (0.11% of the DM) of white clover leaves showed that these comprised 54.2% free sterols, 33.1% esterified sterols, 7.6% acylated steryl glucosides, 3.4% steryl glucosides and 1.7% an unknown form. Total sterol contents of the leaves of several other plants liable to be consumed by ruminants were: red clover 0.10% (of DM), lucerne 0.11%, Astragalus sinicus 0.10%, Avena sativa 0.05%, Italian ryegrass 0.08%, cocksfoot 0.09%, meadow foxtail 0.09%, Artemisia vulgaris 0.10%, Plantago major 0.09%, Rumex crispus var. japonicus 0.08%, Brassica oleracea 0.09% and Spinacia oleracea 0.09%. The main sterol present was tentatively identified as beta -sitosterol. |
