Abstract/Contents:As pelleted seeds with wet coatings vary widely in shape and size and have the disadvantage that germination might take place or be reduced during storage, the direct compression method was investigated using microcrystalline cellulose to coat seeds in the form of tablets 9 mm in diameter, 3 mm thick and weighing 200-300 mg. This method was successful with red clover when the coating was 50-80% microcrystalline cellulose + 50-20% peat moss powder, and germination was not reduced by compression. The addition of superphosphate to the tablets reduced germination of Italian ryegrass seeds, whereas calcium magnesite did not; both fertilizers reduced germination of red clover. Compound fertilizer (14-14-14) at (1% by weight severely reduced germination, but this was prevented by the addition of 1% algin. The direct compression method promoted germination of alsike clover and Bermuda grass and it was thought the method might be promising for small-seeded species, e.g. Ladino clover, birdsfoot trefoil and Kentucky bluegrass.
