| Abstract/Contents: | Weeds were sampled in 84 fields in Alaska in 1981 in crops of potatoes, barley, wheat, oats, broccoli, strawberries, oilseed rape and Kentucky bluegrass. Introduced weed populations increased with increasing number of yr the fields were cultivated. Native weed populations decreased dramatically during the 1st yr of cultivation then remained fairly constant. After 5 yr cultivation, the only native spp. remaining were Achillea borealis, Dracocephalum parviflorum, Epilobium angustifolium, Equisetum arvense, Galium boreale, Moehringia lateriflora and Rosa acicularis in grain crops. The major introduced spp. were Chenopodium album, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Hordeum jubatum and Stellaria media after 5 yr. After 20 yr the main weed spp. were S. media and Matricaria matricarioides [Chamomilla suaveolens] in cereals and Agropyron repens [Elymus repens], C. album, Polygonum [Bilderdykia] convolvulus and S. media in potatoes. |
