Abstract/Contents:Treatments were made during 1980, 81, 82, and 83 to determine the influence of both potash, and potash and nitrogen on winter survival of Cynodon dactylon, Tifway (T-419) and Midiron (P-16) Cynodon dactylon . Potash was not found to be the cure-all for winter kill of Cynodon dactylon. Medium soil test levels of potassium were adequate for plant metabolic functions. Multiple rates of potash with 2 lb. and 4 lb./M ft2 showed no significant differences except in stand density. Stand densities reflected nitrogen levels, not potash rates. Peak growth benefits to the Cynodon dactylon were realized at potassium rates of 2 lbs. under low nitrogen, and 4 lbs. under high nitrogen. Winter desiccation and fluctuating late winter to early spring temperatures were major causes of winter kill.
