| Abstract/Contents: | Elemental sulphur (90%) was used repeatedly on P. pratensis turf at relatively high rates (440, 660, 880, 1100 or 1320 kg/ha) to control a moderately alkaline condition in a heavy clay loam soil. The initial response was thinning of the turf which first appeared in the third year. Data from soil samples could not explain this thinning nor the severe injury that occurred the following spring. Two years later, surface samples just below the turf mat revealed a drastic reduction of pH progressively down to 3.5 as the amount of S increased. The delay in reaction was attributed to the slow release of S, probably due to low populations of S-oxidizing bacteria in a soil that had not received elemental S before. |
