| Abstract/Contents: | "Six Kentucky bluegrass cultivars and three blends were established in a randomized block design with four replications in September, 1976. They were seeded at 10 g m-2 in 1 m2 plots. Each cultivar in three-way blends comprised 33% of seeding rate. Turfs were mowed weekly at 5.0 cm; waters to prevent visual drought stress; and fertilized with 20 g N m-2. On July 7, 1981 the study was evaluated for billbug injury and larval density based on a naturally occurring infestation. Larval density counts correlated (r = 0.90) to visual estimates of injury for cultivars and blends. 'Nugget' 'Sydsport' and 'Fylking' had the highest visual injury rating. 'South Dakota' and 'Park' had the lowest. Newport was intermediate in injury response. Blends closely approximated the mean response for individual cultivars comprising the blend. High injury ratings were associated with blends of susceptible cultivars. The reverse was true for blends with low injury ratings. Blending susceptible and non-susceptible cultivars resulted in an intermediate injury response." |
