Abstract/Contents:"A sclerotial low-temperature basidiomycete (SLTB) was identified by dikaryotic-monokaryotic matings as Coprinus psychromorbidus. This fungus was previously shown to be the perfect state of the LTB snow mold pathogen. SLTB has a host range and distribution that is very similar to that of the LTB snow mold. Isolates of SLTB vary in morphology and growth rate but tend to grow more slowly than LTB, have a lower temperature optimum (10-15°C), and produce a more compact, matted mycelium. A distinctive feature of isolates from field collections of sclerotia is the consistent production of brownish black sclerotia in culture. Somoe isolates derived from field sclerotia cultured on corn meal-malt-yeast agar at 6°C have remained sclerotial for 10 years. However isolates with intermediate growth characteristics and ability to produce sclerotia were obtained from mycelium in diseased tissues. Sclerotial strains were shown to be pathogenic to turfgrass and witner wheat in preliminary tests."
