Abstract/Contents: | Summarizes methods of water conservation made necessary by limited future water resources. Cool-season grasses are listed in order of greatest drought avoidance to least: Tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass (=fine fescue), creeping bentgrass, and rough bluegrass (=annual bluegrass). Managing factors to deal with evapotranspiration (ET) include mowing to a height that balances ET and drought resistance, using moderate levels of nitrogen fertilization, and irrigating infrequently but deeply during mild water stress. |
