| Abstract/Contents: | Profiles two species of turfgrass that may be useful in low maintenance areas: centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides) and buffalograss (Buchloe dactyloides). Details the appearance, growth habit, typical uses, and extent of selective breeding for each species. Soil, water, fertilizer, and pesticide requirements are also discussed. Characteristics of carpetgrass (Axoponus affinis), a species similar to centipedegrass, are briefly summarized. The author concludes that while centipedegrass and carpetgrass are well adapted for use in low maintenance turf in the Southeastern U.S., buffalograss is less well adapted to the region's climate and may require further development before it can be used. |
