Abstract/Contents:Describes a study to determine whether Kentucky bluegrass will use more water if mowed at 3 inches than at 1 inch, if mowing higher in the spring will result in a deeper rooting system, and if mowing shorter in the summer will result in less water use. Concludes that varying cutting heights on turf resulted in less water use than mowing at a constant height. Visual quality was also higher for the varied cuts. Also describes a study to determine how much effect nitrogen has on turf water use and how much effect potassium has on water use and drought tolerance. Concludes that the effect of N on water use is minimal and that unfertilized turf is inefficient in using water to promote growth. Using K and N together helps reduce water use.
