Abstract/Contents:Discusses farming methods used to control erosion and suggests that with modification, construction companies can use similar methods. Provides a series of steps to control erosion. The steps include: mimimize soil disturbance, keep the soil covered (conservation tillage), improve the soil quality by adding organic material, use soil surveys for information about specific soils, use the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) models to estimate sediment loss and deposition, use the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) to estimate soil losses at construction and mining sites, take advantage of voluntary government programs, use a private-public partnership, use buffer strips to protect surface waters from pollution by sediments and other contaminants, use stiff-grass barriers as a less expensive alternative to concrete for controlling slope and channel erosion, use construction contractors to install erosion control structures, use polyacrylamides (PAMs) to stem soil losses at construction sites, roughen the soil surface to reduce wind erosion, and use the Wind Erosion Equation to predict wind erosion.
