Abstract/Contents:Discusses several leaders in environmental stewardship. Interviews Jim Hollifield, process coordinator and business development specialist for Duke Energy of Charlotte, NC. He helped Duke Energy become an environmental steward, which involved changing policies from sediment management to erosion control. The change means more vegetation establishment and disturbing only what is essential. The program also utilizes extensive community relations and environmental consultation. Also profiles Colin Sword, district engineer in the Southwest for Sprint Communications where he oversees erosion control along a cable route. Discusses some of the difficulty in his job due to the climate. Profiles Michael Allen, who manages permits and right of way for oil and gas transmission lines for Mustang Engineering of Houston, Texas. Discusses the benefits of education to enhance good land and water stewardship. Also porfiles Ben Northcutt, executive director of International Erosion Control Association, who also emphasizes the importance of public awareness and education concerning erosion control. Fred Wright, in charge of the construction inspection department of the Unified Sewerage Agency of Washington County, stresses that teamwork is essential when educating the public and clients about erosion. Bill Agnew, principal of Reveg Environmental Consulting Inc. of Fort Collins, Colorado, helped his community get involved with erosion control and bioengineering. The article also includes a case study of homesite development erosion. Discusses the Soil and Water Conservation Sociey (SWCS) and their efforts to improve education, stewardship, and marketing. Describes SWCS policies, regulations and standards. Also describes the benefits of demonstration projects used in education.
