Abstract/Contents:Describes how herbicides work and examines their modes of action so landscape managers and turf professionals can better make use of them. Modes refer to the exact process in the plant that is affected by an herbicide. Modes discussed include: photosynthesis, amino-acid and protein synthesis, cell division, cell membrane, cell-wall biosynthesis, pigment synthesis, growth regulation and inhibition, and nitrogen metabolism. Modes associated with herbicide persistence include: volatility, leaching, adsorption, photo-decomposition, and microbial processes.
