Abstract/Contents:"Six fungicides were applied at field rates to 'Park' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and evaluated for their effects on germination, germ tube elongation, and appressorium formation of conidia of Bipolaris sorokiniana on leaves of Kentucky blue-grass. Anilazine, maneb, cycloheximide, and chlorothalonil significantly reduced germination; RP-26019 and PCNB only moderately reduced germination. Germ tube elongation and appressorium formation were greatly suppressed by RP-26019, anilazine, maneb, and chlorothalonil but were only slightly reduced by cycloheximide and PCNB. Rp-26019, anilazine, maneb, and chlorothalonil provided excellent disease control, whereas cycloheximide and PCNB were not effective. These results suggested that the efficacy of these fungicides is more dependent upon inhibition of germ tube elongation and appressorium formation than upon germination inhibition. The collodion leaf impression technique was an effective method for evaluating fungicide activity, and it also provides a permanent record of the fate of conidia on leaf surfaces."
