Abstract/Contents: | Discusses competition between trees and grasses that do not naturally exist together. Trees have the edge over grass in collecting light because they are much taller. Some trees are less dense and allow light to penetrate the ground so that grass can grow. Grass being closer to the ground takes the upper hand in gathering water and nutrients. The turf manager must play the mediator in the turf tree relationship. Allowing significant light through and applying fertilizers helps the turf. Applying pregerminated seeds and turf cover in the spring help the density of the turf also. Also discusses leaf area and rooting depth. |
