Abstract/Contents:"Timing of nemacure applications for management of cyst nematodes 1996-1997: The purpose of this study was to determine if two properly timed applications of Nemacur would provide suppression of cyst nematodes, into the next growing season. A putting green in Bedford, NY was chosen for the trial because of relatively high population of the cyst nematode. Heterodera iri. The turf was a mixture of annual bluegrass and bentgrass. The putting green, 70 years old, was built on native soil and top-dressed with a sand-based material for approximately 20 years. Mechanical analysis of the top 4 in of soil showed it to be 79% sand, 15% silt, 6% clay. USDA criteria identify this as a loamy sand based on the sand subfractions. the green was mowed, fertilized, watered and cared for consistent with standard golf green management practices. Plots were 6x6 ft, five replications per treatment, and completely randomized. In 1996, Nemacur treatments were as follows: a single application on 18 Apr, an application on 18 Apr followed by another application to the same plots on 24 Jun, and an application on 18 Apr followed by another application to the same plots on 12 Aug. Five additional untreated plots served as controls. Nemacur was applied at the rate of 2.3 lb/1,000 sp ft per application date. For nematode assays, ten subsamples per plot were collected with a 1 in soil sampling tube to the depth of 4 in, bulked, and extracted. nematodes were recovered by wet sieving/sugar flotation and identified to genus. Hoplolaimus, Criconemella, Longidorus and Heterodera were counted. Only data for Heterodera is presented here. the data was subjected to a one-way analysis of variance and a test of LSD. 1996. Cysts with eggs were more numerous in Apr and declined through late May. This was expected since previous studies showed that cyst juveniles emerge during this period. The Apr/Jun Nemacur treatment significantly decreased cysts by 18 Jun, although the Jun Nemacur application had not been made. by 15 Jul and 15 Aug, cysts were significantly reduced in all Nemacur treatments. By 23 Sep, none of the treatments were significantly lower than the control but the control population had dropped to half of the 15 Aug collection. The drop in cysts in the control was due to emergence of juveniles during Aug. Populations of juveniles showed a similar trend as the cysts, but statistical differences were fewer. On 15 Jul, the Apr and Apr/Aug treatments were significantly less than the control, and on 23 Sep, the Apr/Jun treatment was significantly less than the control. 1997. No additional treatments of Nemacur were made in 1997. on 14 Apr, cysts were significantly lower in all Nemacur treatments when compared to the control. On 11 Aug, cysts were reduced in the Apr and the Apr/Aug treatments at the 0.1% confidence level. by 15 Sep, the Apr/Aug treatment had a higher cyst population than the control at the 0.1% confidence level. Populations of juveniles showed a similar trend as in 1996 but there were no significant differences on any of the collection dates at the 0.05% confidence level. The Apr/Aug juvenile population rose as expected for the cyst counts. These data indicate that Nemacur effectively reduces cyst nematode populations for one year, and that control may extend into the following year. Two applications of Nemacur did not effectively extend the period of nematode suppression into the second year."
