Abstract/Contents: | Discusses America's solution to the lack of enough medium-sized soccer fields -- retrofitting existing sports facilities to accommodate soccer. Discusses the process involved with retrofitting. Examples given include the Rose Bowl reconstruction, the Pontiac Silverdome's indoor natural turfgrass field, and the 0hio State Stadium, which needed to be downsized in order to hide empty seats and create a more intimate atmosphere for the players and spectators. Colorful drapes were used to cover whole decks and successfully downsized the stadium. Also mentions the reconstruction of Lockhart Stadium in South Florida to accommodate the Miami Fusion and the efforts of officials to convert Frontier Field in New York from a baseball field to an all-grass soccer stadium. Also describes the reconstruction of Finley Stadium in Chattanooga to accommodate soccer. |
