Abstract/Contents: | Describes the process to restore the field at The Stadium, Kingspark in time for the Rugby Currie-Cup semi-final in October 1997, three days after a Michael Jackson concert. Portafloor, developed by Arnon Rosin, was used as a ground protector during the concert. An additional problem encountered was heavy rainfall just prior to the concert. After the concert, the Portafloor was removed and revealed pockets of heavy turf saturation from the rain. A helicopter was used to help dry the turf. Groundsman Norman Ritter had his team squeegee off the water and hand rake the grass to encourage drying. Using fungicides, fertilizer, and paint, the field was ready in time for the rugby match. Also mentions that the turf has been replaced since the concert with 'Gulf-green', a shade-tolerant Cynodon variety. |
