Abstract/Contents:Describes the six-month pilot program established by San Diego to test new concepts for managing green waste, primarily through composting. Discusses the many types of equipment experimented with to find the most efficient means of handling the waste including: loaders, trommel screens, windrow turners, tanker trucks, and irrigation lines. Discusses the ongoing experimentation with staffing techniques such as prison crews, community service workers or city laborers. Currently, city laborers are viewed the most efficient. Also describes the search for compost markets which include: the Parks and Recreation Department, military, California Department of Transportation, avocako and citrus growers, vegetable growers, landscapers, homeowners, and others. The pilot program ended April 30, 1998 with positive results and the establishment of a composting operation.
