Abstract/Contents:"A wide range of reinforcement materials have been developed that have been claimed to improve the performance of turfgrass areas used for both amenity and sports purposes. Most reinforcements are plastic-based and two main groups of materials can be identified, firstly reinforcement systems that form a horizontal layer at or near the turf surface but through which roots can penetrate. Secondly, materials that are mixed or punched into the root-zone layer. Published work on reinforcement systems is reviewed, concentrating on properly replicated trials. Advantages of the different systems that are documented include increased retention of grass cover during wear, less divoting, reduced soil compaction, improved drainage and better playing quality, especially surface stability. Disadvantages include poor grass establishment, and high traction and hardness values. The practicalities of maintaining turfgrass areas that include reinforcement systems and their cost-effectiveness must also be evaluated."
