| Abstract/Contents: | "Buchloë dactyloides(Nutt) Engelm. has recently received renewed attention as a turfgrass species because of its low maintenance requirements. Establishment of seeded Buchloë dactyloides is difficult due to poor seedling vigour. Research has been conducted which shows that heavier caryopses produce more vigorous seedlings in Buchloë dactyloides.; however breeding for increased caryopsis weight in B. dactyloides has not been attempted to date. Thirty half-sib families, with 27 individuals per family, were planted using 'a groups in replications' design for two synthetic turf-type Buchloë dactyloides cultivars, NE-501 and NE-503, at the John Seaton Turfgrass Facility near Ithica, Nebraska, USA, and heritabilities for caryopsis weight were estimated. Realised heritabilities for heavy caryopsis weight were 0.47±0.12 and 0.25±0.10 for NE-501 and NE-503, respectively. Realised increases in caryopsis weight were 12.7% and 18.4% after two cycles of selection in the NE-501 and NE-503 populations respectively." |
