Abstract/Contents:"Experiments were conducted to evaluate the establishment rate of sprigged Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalansis cv. Tifway and corresponding weed control following the use of pre-emergence herbicides. Herbicides were applied either one day before (PRE) or one day following (POST) sprigging at 5.7 m³ ha⁻¹. Plots were aggresively maintained to encourage coverage and included daily watering with 1.0 cm and biweekly fertilisation of 49 kg N ha⁻¹ from various sources. Data were subjected to analyses of variance, means separated by least significant differences (p = 0.05), and various post-hoc contrasts hypothesised to compare application timings (PRE vs. POST) and herbicide formulations. Granular (G) oxadiazon (3.4 kg ha⁻¹) provided quickest cover, equalling the untreated in about 6 weeks while the wettable power (WP) formulation was next, requiring about 10 weeks. Next were simazine (about 12 weeks) at 1.1kg ha⁻¹, metolachlor (12 to 30 weeks) at 2.2 kg ha⁻¹, and pendimethalin (2.8 kg ha⁻¹), prodiamine (0.8 kg ha⁻¹), and dithiopyr at 0.6 kg ha⁻¹ (more than 30 weeks). In one of the three studies, PRE applications of oxadiazon WP, metachlor, pendimethalin, prodiamine, and dithiopyr delayed establishment by about 4 weeks compared with the corresponding POST applications. Pre-emergence Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn. control was 85 to 100% for 12 weeks following both oxadiazon formulations and pendimethalin, about 10 weeks for dithiopyr and about 8 weeks for prodiamine. Pre-emergence Cyperus compressus L. control exceeded 90% for 12 weeks for oxadiazon (both formulations) and metolachlor, and about 6 weeks for simazine. Metolachlor provided about 70% control of Cyperus rotundus L. for 8 weeks. Oxadiazon provided approximately 85% pre-emergence Richardia scabra L. control for 16 weeks followed by about 75% control for pendimethalin for 16 weeks and dithiopyr for 10 weeks. Oxadiazon WP provided about 80% pre-emergence Cenchrus echinatus L. control for 16 weeks followed by approximately 65% control for dithiopyr and oxadiazon G. Excellent (90 to 100%) control of Digitaria ciliaris (Retz.) Koel. for 16 weeks followed both oxadiazon formulations, dithiopyr, pendimethalin, and prodiamine."
