Abstract/Contents:"A number of the growth retardants which have been tested on turf act by blocking gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis. The newer forms of these retardants, the acylcyclohexanediones such as Trinexapac-ethyl (Primo™), block the final step in the biosynthesis of the biologically active forms of gibberellins. Chemical modification of GA₅ causes a similar biosynthetic block. One GA₅ derivative, DMDGA₅, is as effective as Primo™ in retarding growth of cool season turf grasses. Where it is desirable to both retard growth and prevent unsightly growth of reproductive heads a different approach may be needed. To this end, both mutation breeding and the use of genetic transformation are options. Manipulation of flowering time is currently possible through transformation of dicotyledonous species. For grasses, such an approach is imminent since the desired floral-specific gene sequences have been identified in grasses such as Lolium and transformation has been established for both Lolium and Festuca."
