Abstract/Contents:"In a shade environment as much attention needs to be paid to tolerance of grasses to low temperature, drought or waterlogging as to light. Some regions probably have incident light levels in winter too low to support perennial turfs under shade. Usual morphological adaptations to shade and low red/far-red ratio (R/FR) to increase light interception would seem undesirable for shaded turf grasses because increased mowing would be necessary, weakening the sward. There appears to be opportunity to select grasses without such adaptations. Light use efficiency can increase under shade, and under low nutrient conditions better N cycling under shade may enhance photosynthetic rate more than the decline due to low light input. Shade effects on the total under-canopy ecology in relation to seeding, diseases, insects, etc. need to be considered. For most circumstances, selection of turfgrasses from grass species that can also cope with full sun conditions rather than those that are specially 'shade-adapted' would seem the best option for good turfs under shade but selection efforts need to be spread wider than the usual genera used for pasture purposes."
