Abstract/Contents:"In the United Kingdom problems associated with shade and microclimate can significantly affect the quality of the pitch within major soccer stadia. Work was carried out to examine the effects of the grass species and eight cultivars of Lolium perenne L. on ground cover, traction and hardness under the combined conditions of wear and shade. There was little difference in total ground cover throughout the course of the playing season for 60:40 mixtures of Lolium perenne: Poa pratensis L. or L. perenne: Festuca rubra L. compared with L. perenne alone. The P. pratensis failed to compete with the L. perenne at the establishment phase and accounted for, at most, 4% of ground cover. F. rubra contributed 21% to ground cover before wear but its poor wear tolerance meant that its cover had fallen to <1% after four months of wear. There were significant effects of cultivar selection on ground cover. There inclusion of P. pratensis and F. rubra in mixtures with L. perenne had very little effect on traction or surface hardness although there was a significant effect of cultivar selection on traction. Further work on cultivar selection for shade areas is suggested as there was no obvious relationship between cultivar rankings in this study, which was carried out in a shaded situation, with data published for more open sites."
