Abstract/Contents:Seeds of 9 cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass of Polish and non-Polish origin were tested with 3 different phenol substrates: (a) phenol; (b) catechol, (c) p-cresol. Florets of cv. Merion were distinguishable from Polish cultivars by the phenol method, the best technique being the use of 0.6% buffered catechol solution on seeds previously soaked in 0.067M phosphate buffer solutions of pH 6.0 for 24 h. The florets of different cultivars differed in the relative enzymatic activities of cresolase and catecholase. The results of direct color tests and Warburg manometric measurements on homogenized tissues of seed samples were in full agreement with the phenol tests.
