Abstract/Contents:"Knowledge of root adaptation to heterogeneous soil moisture regimes in turfgrasses would improve management strategies and facilitate turfgrass breeding for drought resistance. The experiment investigated root activity and spatial distribution in relation to drought resistance for four warm-season turfgrass species, viz Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. 'common', Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro) Hack cv. Tifblair, Paspalum vaginatum Swartz (four ecotypes), and Zoysia japonica Steud cv. Emerald, under surface soil drying. Plants were grown in split PVC tubes with three soil moisture treatments in a greenhouse during 1995 and 1996. The responses of root spatial distribution and activity to surface soil drying varied with grass species and genotypes. Superior drought resistance for PI 509018 Paspalum vaginatum and Eremochloa ophiuroides cv. Tifblair was associated with high root plasticity as indicated by enhanced root growth at deeper soil layers and maintenance of root activity when drought occurred in the upper soil profile. Root length per unit root mass was less clearly related to drought resistance. Differences in these characteristics among turfgrasses could serve as selection criteria for improving turf drought-resistance."
