Abstract/Contents:"The variation in Al tolerance among bents (Agrostis spp.) is not well known. The objective of this study was to evaluate Al tolerance among 15 Agrostis stolonifera L. and three Agrostis tenuis Sibth. cultivars. The 18 genotypes were screened for Al tolerance under greehouse conditions using solution culture, sand culture, and Tatum soil (clayey, mixed, thermic Typic Hapludult). Concentrations of 0 and 640 μM and a pH of 4.0 were used for nutrient solutions in the solution and sand cultures. The Tatum soil had 69% exchangeable Al and a pH of 4.4. Grasses were seeded into the three media, and after four weeks Al tolerance was evaluated by measuring the relative length and mass of shoots and roots. The Agrostis tenuis cultivars, 'SR 7100', 'Exeter' and 'Tendez', were more tolerant of Al than most of the Agrostis stolonifera cultivars. Differences in Al tolerance were observed between cultivars of A. stolonifera. The genetic differences in Al tolerance within Agrostis species suggest that the potential exists to use soil pH in a cultural management strategy to control acid intolerant grassy weeds and their associated diseases in Agrostis turfs."
