| Abstract/Contents: | "Inter-varietal differences in root systems could be a critical component for the genetic improvement of drought avoidance and nutrient uptake efficiency in Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm. Past studies have concentrated on above ground colour, quality, density, and rate of spread. Information on Buchloe dactyloides root systems is limited to a small number of varieties. Comparisons were made between 22 genotypes of B. dactyloides under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was a Randomised Complete Block (RCB) with three replicates. The entries were grown for six months in 7.6 cm internal diameter by 187 cm deep plastic tubes filled with washed river sand. The tubes were drip irrigated daily and treated weekly with a modified Hoaglands (210 mg N per litre) solution over the six months. The roots were harvested at depths of 0-15, 15-30, 30-60, 60-90, 90-120, 120-150 and >150 cm and measured for total depth, dry weight, and density. This experiment showed significant differences for total root depth, dry weight by depth, total dry weight, density by depth and total root density between the Buchloe dactyloides genotypes." |
