| Abstract/Contents: | "Digitisation of photographic images of turfgrass canopies is exploited as a means of quantifying colour ratings which are usually subjective. Specifically, photographs are taken parallel to the soil surface, prints are digitized with a flatbed scanner, and the images are manipulated on a computer to extract the hue-saturation-intensity colour parameters. These parameters can then be used to interpret colour changes occurring in a stand in a rigorous manner. We present the spring greenup of Zoysia japonica cv. Meyer as an example of the kind of data and level of precision that can be obtained with this technique. It is important to stress, however, that we foresee this as only part of a plethora of techniques that will eventually enable the quantification of turfgrass rating procedures." |
