Abstract/Contents: | "Activating natural defence mechanisms of plants leading to increased resistance to disease is of great current interest internationally. The overall process is known as systemic induced or acquired resistance, whereby plants become resistant to pathogens after earlier localised exposure to a pathogen or to some non-pathogenic micro-organisms or to a chemical that is not itself a pesticide. It has been much studied in recent years. The mechanism involves the transmission of a signal from the first affected site. The signalling process requires salicylic acid. Reception of the signal changes the physiology of plant cells so that their natural defence systems come into action. These systems include the action of defence-related proteins. A new chemical activator is benzothiadiazole, announced by Ciba-Geigy in 1995 and used commercially in 1996 for protecting wheat crops in Europe against powdery mildew fungi. Biological activation by soil-borne micro-organisms is possible in some plant systems. There are good prospects for using the procedures for controlling turf diseases." |
