| Abstract/Contents: | "Biological control of turfgrass diseases with microbial inoculants is reviewed. Specific biological control systems for both foliar and root diseases are described. Special emphasis is placed on microbial mechanisms of biological control and the microbial traits important in these biological control processes. Of the traits common to soil microbes, there are at least five that have been consistently linked with biological control activity. These include: 1) the production of toxic metabolites such as antibiotics and inhibitory volatiles; 2) microbial resource competition; 3) hyperparasitism; 4) induction of systemic plant resistance; and 5) rhizosphere competence. These are described to indicate their potential role in turfgrass disease control. The limitations of biological control of turfgrass diseases with microbial inoculants and needs for the future are discussed." |
