Abstract/Contents:"Certain composts have been shown to suppress a range of fungal pathogens and pathogenic nematodes of turfgrasses. Antagonistic microflora present in 'mature' composts mediate this suppression. There is a growing interest in using organic amendments such as the residues of Brassica spp. to control agricultural and horticultural pests and diseases. The brassica residues decompose in soil to release volatile isothiocyanates, which are selectively biocidal. They also exert an indirect effect on the pathogens and pests by encouraging antagonistic microorganisms such as Trichoderma spp. and actinomycetes, which further reduce their inoculum potential. Since some of the turf pathogens and nematodes belong to the same genera as those suppressed in agriculture, there is the potential for their use in the turf industry. Further research is required to investigate the types of brassica residues to use, the Brassica spp. which release the most toxic isothiocyanates, and the methods and rates of application for optimal efficacy without attendant phytotoxic effects on established turfgrasses. For fumigating greens, this form of 'biofumigation' may become a cheap replacement for methyl bromide or metham sodium (methyl isothiocyanate)."
