Abstract/Contents: | "The progress of Rhizoctonia blight was studied in blends of tall fescue (Festuca arundicaea Schreb.) composed of cultivars that are resistant (Kentcuky 31) or susceptible (Mojave) to Rhizoctonia solani AG 1-Ia. Models were developed from disease severity and incidence data to describe the effect that an increase in the proportion of Kentucky 31 in a blend had on the progress of Rhizoctonia blight. In controlled environment studies, linear regression estimates for disease severity revealed a decrease in disease progress of 1.83 and 0.59 for each 20% increase of Kentucky 31 in a blend during 1994 and 1995, respectively. A similar relationship was revealed in the field in 1996 for disease severity with a 1.33 unit reduction in disease progress. No consistent relationship was detected between cultivar blend and disease incidence or rate of disease increase. Results suggests that the resistant component in a blend delayed lesion expansion in the turfgrass canopy rather than inhibit spread of R. solani among shoots." |
