Abstract/Contents:"Dollar spot is a serious disease of creeping bent (Agrostis stolonifera L.) putting greens in North America and Europe. Recent control studies have focused on microbial suppression of dollar spot using natural organic fertilizers and composts. The objective of this study was to determine if disease suppression is greater with natural organic fertilizers than with synthetic organic nitrogen (N) sources and to examine the role of N availability on dollar spot severity. Results showed that urea, a synthetic organic N source, provided equal or better disease control than five fertilizers derived mostly from natural organic sources. On the majority of rating dates, dollar spot severity was correlated with turf colour, indicating that as N availability increased, disease severity decreased. The Nitroform treatment was an exception to this trend, providing dark green turf throughout most of the test but not superior disease suppression. This study demonstrated that fertilizers derived primarily from natural organic sources vary in dollar spot suppressive effects and are not superior to all synthetic organic N sources when used as fertilizers on putting greens."
