Abstract/Contents:"Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis was used to study and confirm a suspected link between Gaeumannomyces cylindrosporus and Phialophora graminicola. Colony morphology, growth rates and RAPD-PCR generated DNA fingerprints of three isolates of G. cylindrosporus and nine isolates of P. graminicola were compared. A 369 base pair product generated by primer OPA-02 was shared among all isolates of G. cylindrosporus and P. graminicola, and was not shared with any of the 42 isolates comprising six other species of ectotrophic root-infecting fungi of turfgrasses. In addition to the shared 369 base pair genetic marker, G. cylindroporus and P. graminicola exhibited similar colony characteristics and growth rates. Combined assessment of molecular and morphological characteristics reinforced the taxonomic relationship between the two species."
