Abstract/Contents:"The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a primary pest of turfgrass across the United States and related species are damaging to turfgrass throughout the world. Representative cultivars and genotypes of 10 cool season turfgrasses [Festuca arundinacea Schreb., F. ovina L., F. ovina var. duriuscula L. Koch, F. rubra var. commutata Gaud., Lolium multiflorum Lan., L. perenne L., Poa arachnifera Torr, P. pratensis (L.), and P. trivialis L. and P. arachnifera x P. pratensis hybrids], and five warm season turfgrasses [Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm., Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers., C. dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensis (Burtt-Davy), Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze, and Zoysia japonica Steud.] were evaluated for susceptibility to feeding by the fall armyworm. Experiments were conducted in no-choice feeding chambers in the laboratory. Autumn and Spring greenhouse or field grown plant material was evaluated. Fall armyworm susceptibility/resistance was measured as survivorship, developmental time, larvae and pupal weight and days to pupation and adult emergence. Resistance to fall armyworm as antibiosis (high mortality, slowed growth, or reduced feeding) was identified in Zoysia japonica cv. Cavalier, Buchloe dactyloides cv. Prairie, Poa pratensis cv. Baron and three Poa hybrids (P. pratensis x P. arachnifera), and in F. arundinacea cvs. Rebel II and Rebel Jr. The other turf species tested were susceptible to feeding by fall armyworm. Mortality of larvae ranged from 0 - 100% depending upon the genotype or turf species."
