Abstract/Contents:"Field and greenhouse studies were conducted from 1988 to 1991 to evaluate the effectiveness of dithiopyr [S,S-dimethyl, 2-(difluromethyl)-4-(2-methylpropyl)-6-(trifluoromethyl)-3, 5-pyridinedicarbothioate) for Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. control and to determine the response of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L) to four consecutive annual applications of dithiopyr. Dithiopyr at 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.6, 0.8, 1.1, 1.7, and 2.2 kg a.i. ha⁻¹ was applied pre-emergence to weeds on an established stand of perennial ryegrass. Stand density and root regrowth were determined by sampling plugs from each plot and growing the turf plugs in the greenhouse. After six weeks of growth in the greenhouse, plants were harvested to determine tiller and rhizome numbers, root length, and root and top dry weights. Digitaria sanguinalis control was excellent with all treatments 11 weeks after treatment (WAT) in four years. In general, ryegrass was tolerant up to 1.1 kg ha⁻¹ of dithiopyr. A slgiht injury (5 to 20%) was noted with dithiopyr at 1.1 to 2.2 kg ha⁻¹ 8 WAT in 1988 and 3 to 7% injury at 1.7 and 2.2 kg ha⁻¹ 4 WAT in 1991. None of the treatments affected either ryegrass colour or quality in all years. Most of the treatments did not reduce root weights, reflecting no adverse effects on root regrowth. One annual spring application of dithiopyr (0.1 to 0.6 kg ha⁻¹) for four consecutive years caused no adverse effects on the recovery or overall quality of the treated perennial ryegrass, although a slight reduction in root regrowth was noted with the rates of 1.1 to 2.2 kg ha⁻¹ dithiopyr in the greenhouse."
