Abstract/Contents:"Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy cv. 'Midlawn' and Zoysia japonica Steud. cv. El Toro are becoming widely used cultivars in the northern transition zone. Studies were conducted in 1995 and 1996 in Lonoke, AR and Stillwater, Oklahoma to determine the effects of pre-emergence herbicides, applied at the time of sprigging, on establishment of both cultivars. Herbicide use rates in kg ai ha⁻¹ were simazine (1.1), prodiamine (0.8), dithiopyr (0.6), oryzalin (1.7), pendimethalin (1.7), and oxadiazon (2.2). Additional treatments included simazine (1.1) tank mixed with each herbicide and rate listed above. A post-emergence treatment of MSMA (2.2) was also applied between 3 and 5 weeks after application of the pre-emergence herbicides. Both cultivars were tolerant to simazine applied alone; however, herbicide tank mixtures containing simazine significantly reduced establishment of 'Midlawn'. Although few significant differences in turf cover were found among the herbicide treatments, the greatest turf coverage and weed control for both cultivars was achieved with oxadiazon. The post-emergence MSMA treatment resulted in greater turf cover of both cultivars when compared to the untreated control."
