Abstract/Contents:"Corn gluten meal (CGM) and corn gluten hydrolysate (CGH) are natural products that have been shown to prevent the establishment of weeds in turf and other crop systems. In petri dish bioassays, CGH was demonstrated to have a greater inhibitory effect than CGM on creeping bent (Agrostis stolonifera L.), Digitaria ischaemum Schreb., and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). In greenhouse studies, the 2.0 g CGH/dmĀ² reduced the establishment of Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. by 80% whereas 6.0 g CGM/dmĀ² were required to achieve 80% reduction. The establishment of creeping bent was reduced by 90% with 2.0 g CGH/dmĀ² or 6.0 g CGM/dmĀ². To reach approximate by 50% reduction of perennial ryegrass, 1.0 g/dmĀ² of CGH and more than 4.0 g/dmĀ² of CGM were required. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Weber) establishment was reduced by 53% with the application of 1.0 g CGH/dmĀ² whereas there was only 14% reduction with CGM at the same rate. In a two-year field study, both CGH and CGM reduced crabgrass infestation in Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) turf."
