Abstract/Contents:"The seasonal effects of six pre-emergence herbicides on the root systems of two Cā‚„, warm-season turfgrasses were assessed in an extensive two-year, multiple application, field study. Oryzalin, pendimethalin and prodiamine of the dinitroaniline group, plus DCPA, dithiopyr and oxadiazon, were assessed for their effects on seasonal root mass and total root length of Stenotaphrum secundatum cv Raleigh and the hybrid Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis cv. Tifway. DCPA was shown to be the most safe of the six pre-emergence herbicides in terms of effects on the root system of Cynodon hybrid Tifway; while all of the dinitroaniline herbicides were shown to adversely affect the root system of Tifway at 4 weeks after treatment. Prodiamine was the only herbicide that was shown to adversely affect the root system of the Stenotaphrum cultivar Raleigh for both years of the study during the four weeks after treatment. There were no adverse rooting effects that persisted on either turfgrass species at 32 weeks after treatment in the first year, and at 24 weeks after treatment after the second consecutive year of herbicide application. Further, there were no residual herbicide effects on the roots of either species from the first to second year othat were of practical concern."
