Abstract/Contents:"A three year (1993 to 1995) field study evaluated Cyperus esculentus L. management in Cynodon dactylon x C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy cv. Tifway II with post-emergence herbicides. Treatments included two foliar applications each year of the following herbicides to the same plots: imazaquin (0.28 kg ai ha⁻¹), MSMA (2.2 kg ai ha⁻¹), halosulfuron (0.07 kg ai ha⁻¹), bentazon (1.1 kg ai ha⁻¹), imazaquin (0.28 kg ai ha⁻¹) + MSMA (2.2 kg ai ha⁻¹), halosulfuron (0.07 kg ai ha⁻¹) + MSMA (2.2 kg ai ha⁻¹), imazaquin (0.28 kg ai ha⁻¹) + bentazon (1.1 kg ai ha⁻¹), halosulfuron (0.07 kg ai ha⁻¹) + bentazon (1.1 kg ai ha⁻¹), imazaquin (0.28 kg ai ha⁻¹) + halosulfuron (0.07 kg ai ha⁻¹). Halosulfuron + bentazon was the only treatment that provided greater than 80% shoot suppression in 1993. Cyperus shoot suppression improved with all treatments during 1994 and 1995 except with bentazon alone. Imazaquin and halosulfuron mixtures effectively controlled Cyperus shoots in 1994 and 1995. Tuber numbers declined over time, however, no treatment consistently reduced the tuber population each year. Only imazaquin + MSMA reduced the tuber numbers in 1995 compared with the untreated with 191 tubers per metre² remaining in these plots. Tifway II was minimally injured with imazaquin containing treatments. Additional control measures are needed to further reduce the Cyperus esculentus tuber population in Cynodon turf."
