| Abstract/Contents: | "Water use on heavily trafficked turf areas, such as greens and tees on golf courses and athletic fields, can be high during the summer months and can exceed the water supply through natural precipitation. This requires additional irrigation, usually applied through sprinklers. An alternative for above ground sprinkler irrigation is subground irrigation. However, literature suggests that subground irrigation has its limitations on turf and does not meet the necessary irrigation standards. To date no scientific data exist to support these rather biased opinions. A series of articles aimed at quantifying water use for subground irrigation in comparison to sprinkler irrigation were undertaken. This first article summarizes previous publications on this topic and presents data on rooting depth in differently irrigated (sprinkler vs. subground) research plots and golf greens." |
