Abstract/Contents:In a 1-year experiment in 1973, the morphology, development, 1000-seed weight, seed viability and germination capacity of a number of different ecotypes of P. pratensis, P. palustris and P. compressa were compared. Morphological characteristics and the dates of successive developmental stages exhibited a marked degree of variation between ecotypes. In general, cultivars and ecotypes of P. pratensis, including cv. Skrzeszowicka, were more susceptible to disease than those of P. palustris and P. compressa. P. pratensis cv. Skrzeszowicka and Primo were also less winter-hardy than other ecotypes of the same species. P. palustris had longer reproductive shoots, inflorescences and leaves at the 1st cut than at the 2nd cut, while P. compressa exhibited distinct prostrate, erect and intermediate morphological types, some of which tended to lodge. All the ecotypes studied exhibited seed dormancy and seed of P. palustris from the 2nd harvest had higher percentage germination than seed from the 1st harvest. The highest percentage germination was obtained with freshly-harvested seed of P. compressa.
